Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

SMTM100Smk100

Top left photo of The Miracles taken back in 1962. Pictured clockwise from top left: Bobby Rogers, Marv Tarplin, Ronald White, Claudette Rogers Robinson, and Smokey Robinson. At the time of this photograph, Miracles member Pete Moore (not pictured) was serving in the US Army after being drafted, was replaced by Claudette Rogers Robinson.

Claudette was a cousin of Bobby Rogers. Smokey Robinson married Claudette Rogers in 1959. The Robinson's had two children, both named in honor of Motown: Berry William Borope Robinson was named after Motown chief Berry Gordy with his middle name in honor of fellow Miracles group mates Bobby (Rogers), Ronnie (White)and Pete (Moore), and Tamla Claudette Robinson was named after Motown's original record label, Tamla Records. Motown founder Berry Gordy gave Claudette the official title of the "First Lady of Motown", as noted in his autobiography, because, as a member of the Miracles, (Motown's first group and first recording act), she was the first female artist ever signed to a Motown-affiliated record label (Tamla). Smokey and Claudette divorced in 1986.

Smokey Robinson originally co-wrote the number-one Motown single "My Girl" with Miracles member Ronald White in dedication to Claudette, a song performed most notably by The Temptations. The song was originally intended to be recorded by The Miracles, but since Smokey heard such promise in David Ruffin's (The Temptations) voice, he wanted David to sing it.

Smokey started his solo career in 1973.

Kung Fu Fighting

Jackie Chan's "Supercop" Movie
(1996)

Kung Fu Fighting
"Supercop"

"Kung Fu Fighting" is a disco song written and performed by Carl Douglas and composed and produced by Biddu. It was released as a single in 1974. A version of "Kung Fu Fighting" was recorded by Tom Jones featuring Ruby, (a band formed by Lesley Rankine and Mark Walk), for the 1996 film "Supercop." The lyrics were slightly changed to reference the film and mentions Jackie Chan in the song. The song plays over the end credits of the movie. Jackie Chan is pictured below.

Elvis Presley & Tom Jones

When Tom Jones was a teenager, his idol was Elvis Presley. In early 1965, Jones rocketed to popularity with the huge hit 'It's Not Unusual.' Later that year, they met at the Paramount stage, where Elvis was filming "Paradise Hawaiian Style." After that, they became good friends, spending more and more time together in Las Vegas.

Tom Jones said the following:

I went to Paramount studios in Hollywood to talk about a song for a movie, and they said 'Elvis is here today filming and he would like to meet you.' So I thought, my God, I didn't know that he knew that I existed, because I had three singles out and one album at the time. And that was 'It's Not Unusual,' 'What's New Pussycat' and a ballad called 'With These Hands.' When I go on the set where Elvis was filming, he walked towards me and singing 'With These Hands,' which was my record. I couldn't believe it.

It was like a dream, that Elvis Presley was singing my song, you know, to me!

We had a picture taken, and he said to me, 'How the hell do you sing like that'?

And I said, 'Well, you are partly to blame, you know, listening to your records in the 50s.'
